Borussia Mönchengladbach are on the verge of signing David Herold from 2. Bundesliga side Karlsruher SC, sporting director Rouven Schröder confirmed on Thursday.
The transfer is in its final stages, though no contract has yet been signed and a medical examination remains to be completed, according to Schröder, who spoke at a press conference.
Herold, a 23-year-old left-back, has been a key performer for Karlsruhe this season, registering eight assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. He primarily operates as a traditional full-back, consistently contributing to attacking phases with overlapping runs and accurate crossing ability.
Gladbach have been seeking to bolster their options at left-back, with current incumbent Ramy Bensebaini’s contract set to expire at the end of the season and a move to Bayern Munich heavily linked. The potential departure of Bensebaini has created a clear need for reinforcement in that position, making Herold a logical target.
Karlsruhe, currently positioned in the promotion play-off places in the 2. Bundesliga, will be losing a valuable asset in Herold, who has become a consistent starter for the club over the past two seasons. He joined Karlsruhe in 2021 from Stuttgart’s reserve team, quickly establishing himself as a first-team regular.
Schröder stressed the importance of completing all necessary steps before officially announcing the transfer. “We are on the right track,” he stated, “But nothing has been signed yet, and there is still a medical check pending. And if nothing has been signed yet, then the transfer is not complete.”
The addition of Herold would provide Gladbach with a promising young talent and competition for places in the squad, potentially strengthening their defensive options ahead of next season. The move represents a step up in level for the player, offering him the opportunity to showcase his abilities in the Bundesliga.
