Leeds United are in negotiations with Borussia Mönchengladbach regarding a potential transfer for Swiss centre-back Nico Elvedi, according to reports in Germany. The Premier League club have reportedly submitted an initial bid of €8.5 million for the 29-year-old, who has entered the final year of his contract with the Bundesliga side.
Bild newspaper initially reported Leeds’ concrete interest, noting that Mönchengladbach are currently holding firm, seeking a higher fee for the defender. It has been previously suggested that Elvedi’s contract includes a release clause of around €10 million, potentially complicating negotiations as Gladbach attempt to maximize their return.
Elvedi has been a mainstay in the Mönchengladbach defence since joining from FC Zürich in 2019, making over 160 appearances for the club across all competitions. He has also earned 38 caps for the Switzerland national team, representing his country at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, as well as Euro 2020. Last season, he featured in 32 Bundesliga matches for Mönchengladbach, playing a key role in their 10th-place finish.
A significant factor in Leeds’ pursuit of Elvedi is the presence of manager Daniel Farke, who previously coached the defender at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Farke took charge at Elland Road in July, following Leeds’ relegation from the Premier League, and is overseeing a squad overhaul as the club aims for an immediate return to the top flight. The familiarity between player and coach could be a crucial element in persuading Elvedi to make the move to West Yorkshire.
Leeds have been active in the transfer market this summer, bringing in several new faces as they rebuild their squad. The addition of Elvedi would bolster their defensive options, addressing a clear need following their demotion. Should a deal be agreed, Elvedi’s experience and leadership qualities could prove invaluable as Leeds navigate a competitive Championship season.
