Liverpool are reportedly prepared to meet the €25m release clause in Andrei Ratiu’s contract, potentially bringing the Rayo Vallecano right-back to Anfield this summer. The move comes as manager Andoni Iraola seeks to address a long-standing issue at right-back following the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid last year and the inconsistent form of Jeremie Frimpong and the injury struggles of Conor Bradley.
Ratiu, a 28-year-old Romanian international with 38 caps for his country, was a key player for Rayo Vallecano last season, contributing to five goals across all competitions as the club secured an eighth-place finish in LaLiga. However, it is his defensive capabilities, composure in possession, and passing range that have particularly attracted Iraola, who is familiar with the player’s qualities from his time managing in Spain.
The potential signing of Ratiu is seen as a more affordable option than some other targets Liverpool have considered, including Marco Pelestra. While the club are hoping to negotiate the fee down to around €20m, Ratiu recently signed a new five-year contract with Rayo Vallecano extending his stay until 2030.
Competition for Ratiu’s signature is expected, with Barcelona also reportedly interested in the player as cover and competition for Jules Kounde. However, sources suggest Ratiu is considered a ‘perfect fit’ for Iraola’s planned high-tempo, pressing style of play, aiming to recapture the ‘Heavy Metal football’ previously associated with Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.
This move would make Ratiu the second signing of the Iraola era, following the arrival of Spanish winger Victor Munoz. The addition of a reliable right-back is intended to alleviate the need to deploy Dominik Szoboszlai in an unfamiliar defensive role, allowing the Hungarian international to focus on his preferred attacking midfield position. Liverpool are also pursuing other targets, including a high-class attacking player and a new midfielder, but addressing the right-back position is a priority.
