Olympique Lyonnais have completed the signing of Julien Duranville from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of approximately €5 million, with potential for up to €3.5 million in add-ons, according to L’OL. The Belgian forward has signed a five-year contract with the French club.
Duranville arrived at Dortmund from Anderlecht in 2023 with considerable expectations, but his time in Germany was hampered by persistent injuries. The 20-year-old missed around 70 matches in two and a half years due to seven separate injuries, limiting his opportunities to make a significant impact on the pitch. A loan spell at Basel also failed to fully revitalize his career.
Lyon are hoping this move will allow Duranville to rediscover the form that once marked him as a promising talent. Despite a recent sanction from the DNCG, the French financial regulatory body, and narrowly avoiding relegation to Ligue 2 last season, Lyon have been active in the transfer market, seeking to strengthen their squad. The acquisition of Duranville represents a calculated risk as they attempt to rebuild.
The transfer comes amidst continued speculation surrounding Rayan Cherki’s future, with reports suggesting Dortmund have made an offer for the Lyon midfielder, which has been rejected. Duranville’s arrival does not necessarily preclude a potential move for Cherki, but it does demonstrate Lyon’s intent to reinforce their attacking options regardless. The club confirmed Cherki submitted a letter to owner John Textor indicating his desire to join Dortmund.
Duranville will be looking to establish himself as a key player in Ligue 1 and contribute to Lyon’s ambitions of climbing the league table. The length of his contract suggests the club has a long-term vision for the player, providing him with the time and opportunity to develop and reach his full potential.
