Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes for a fee of £85 million, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The move is part of a significant overhaul of United’s midfield, following the departure of Casemiro to Inter Miami and with Manuel Ugarte potentially being sold.
Romano reported that United made contact with Fernandes’s representatives within the last 48 hours to discuss a potential transfer fee and salary. West Ham are reportedly demanding £85 million for the Portuguese player, who they signed from Southampton for £40 million just one year ago. Despite West Ham’s recent relegation battle, Fernandes’s stock has risen, and the club are prepared to sanction his departure.
United face competition from Paris Saint-Germain for Fernandes’s signature, but are actively pursuing the deal. The potential arrival of Fernandes follows the expected signing of Ederson, signaling a clear intent to rebuild the midfield under new ownership. The club is also reportedly prepared to break their transfer record with a £100 million bid for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, a move that is gaining momentum.
Tonali is considered a top target for manager Michael Carrick, and sources at Newcastle, including The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, suggest the club now ‘expect’ his departure. Tonali’s agent has reportedly been offering him to clubs across Europe, with United now prepared to match Newcastle’s valuation. These potential signings would represent a substantial investment in midfield talent, addressing a key area of the squad in need of reinforcement. The addition of Tonali and Fernandes would provide both experience and dynamism to United’s central options, setting the stage for a competitive season.
