Manchester United are considering a move for an experienced striker this summer, with Danny Welbeck of Brighton & Hove Albion and Ivan Toney of Al-Ahli emerging as potential targets, according to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs. This comes after initial interest in Brentford’s Igor Thiago, though that pursuit appears to have cooled.
The Red Devils have already secured the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, though the club has yet to officially confirm the deal. United are also aiming to strengthen their midfield further, as well as adding players in the left-back and left-wing positions, with the club’s new ownership group, INEOS, and sporting director Jason Wilcox leading the recruitment drive. A centre-back is also a possibility if the budget allows.
Jacobs initially reported in July that United had shown interest in Thiago, who was the second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League last season. However, the focus has shifted towards players with more experience who can provide a positive influence in the dressing room and accept a rotational role. Welbeck, a former United player, has been discussed as a potential option, although Brighton may be reluctant to sell.
Toney, who previously played for Newcastle United and Brentford, has impressed in the Saudi Pro League, scoring 32 goals in 32 matches for Al-Ahli. While United appreciate his goalscoring record, his high wage demands in Saudi Arabia could prove to be a stumbling block. Toney has been linked with a return to the Premier League, but reports suggest he is currently content with his situation in Saudi Arabia.
The pursuit of an experienced striker suggests a change in strategy for United, potentially indicating a desire for a more pragmatic approach to their attacking options. Adding a proven goalscorer could provide valuable support to younger players and strengthen United’s chances of competing on multiple fronts next season.
