Manchester United are considering a move for Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow in the summer transfer window, according to reports. The 35-year-old’s contract with Leeds expires at the end of the month, making him a free agent and an attractive option for the Red Devils.
United currently have Senne Lammens, Altay Bayindir, and Tom Heaton as senior goalkeepers, but Bayindir is widely expected to return to Turkish football this summer. While Heaton recently signed a new deal, his age, 40, suggests a need for further cover and competition in the goalkeeping department. Manager Michael Carrick currently favors Lammens as his number one.
Darlow became a key player for Leeds in the latter half of the 2025/26 season, playing a significant role in the club securing their Premier League status for another year. He made 22 Premier League starts, earning recognition for his performances, including being awarded the Premier League Save of the Month for April for a stop against Wolves’ Hugo Bueno. Leeds have reportedly offered Darlow a short-term contract extension, valuing his influence both on and off the pitch.
Sources close to Leeds have emphasized Darlow’s importance in the dressing room, describing him as “immense” and a “real glue” within the squad. However, Manchester United’s interest presents a potentially appealing alternative. The Athletic also reports that United are also considering a move for Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who has extensive Premier League experience and could be available following Wolves’ relegation to the Championship. The addition of either Darlow or Johnstone would provide valuable depth to United’s goalkeeping ranks as they prepare for Champions League football next season.
