Manchester United have identified Brentford striker Igor Thiago as a potential transfer target this summer, though a move is contingent on outgoings at Old Trafford. The development comes as United prepare for a significant squad overhaul backed by new co-owners INEOS, with around £200 million earmarked for new signings.
United are seeking to bolster multiple positions, including central midfield – where they are nearing a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson – as well as left-back and forward. While a substantial £73 million was invested in Benjamin Sesko last summer, the club are reportedly keen to add further competition and experience in attack. Director of football Jason Wilcox is reportedly a strong advocate for Thiago.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, United are prepared to make an ‘exception’ in their search for a more experienced striker to pursue the 24-year-old Brazilian. Thiago finished the recent Premier League season as the second-highest scorer with 22 goals in 38 appearances, trailing only Erling Haaland. He has scored a total of 90 goals for club and country throughout his senior career.
The potential deal is complicated by Brentford’s expected valuation of around £70 million. Furthermore, United’s pursuit of Thiago is linked to the possible departure of Joshua Zirkzee, with a return to Serie A reportedly being considered. Funds generated from a Zirkzee sale would be used to finance a move for the Brazilian.
Thiago has previously impressed against United, scoring twice in three appearances. He has also earned three caps for Brazil, mirroring his goalscoring record at international level. However, United will face competition from Chelsea, who have also expressed interest in the forward. Despite recently signing a new long-term contract with Brentford, Thiago’s future at the Gtech Community Stadium is not guaranteed, particularly following his involvement in the World Cup which has raised his profile.
