Manchester United exploring cut-price move for AC Milan's Rafael Leao
Manchester United are reportedly exploring a potential summer move for AC Milan forward Rafael Leao, with the Portuguese international available for a fee considered significantly below his market value. According to the Daily Mail, United are among several clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester City, and Real Madrid, to have registered interest after Milan opened the door to a sale. With two years remaining on his contract, Leao could be sold for approximately £60 million, a figure viewed as excellent value for a player of his calibre.
The potential discount arises from Milan's need to balance their books after another season without the Serie A title. Leao, 26, has been a standout performer for the Rossoneri since joining from Lille in 2019, winning the Serie A MVP award in their 2022 title-winning campaign. His blend of pace, dribbling, and goal contribution from the left wing has made him one of Europe's most coveted attacking talents, though his consistency has occasionally been questioned.
For Manchester United, a move for Leao would address a long-standing need for a dynamic, prolific wide forward. The club's attack has often lacked a consistent threat from the flanks, and Leao's profile fits the desired mould for manager Erik ten Hag's system. The reported fee, while substantial, represents a potential bargain compared to the sums quoted for other elite forwards in the current market and is a far cry from the €115 million release clause that was once in his contract.
In other transfer developments, United's interest in Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba has cooled significantly. The Athletic reports that after a proposed move collapsed last summer due to Brighton's £100 million valuation, United now value the 22-year-old at around £50 million following a dip in form. Baleba is said to be in a lower category of midfield targets for the upcoming window.
The club is also considering defensive reinforcements, with Tottenham's Micky van de Ven on a list of left-sided options. United's recruitment team reportedly believes prospects like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven have high potential, but they are seeking a more immediate upgrade, with Van de Ven's situation potentially becoming more straightforward if Tottenham suffer relegation.
Furthermore, Jadon Sancho's departure from Old Trafford appears finalized. Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg reports that the winger, currently on loan at Aston Villa, has approved a return to Borussia Dortmund, with all financial details on the table. United are expected to decline their option to extend his contract, concluding a disappointing £73 million acquisition.
United's search for a backup goalkeeper also continues, with long-term target Zion Suzuki of Parma refusing to rule out a Premier League move. The Japanese international told Parma Live he is focused on his current club and the upcoming World Cup but admitted he likes the English top flight. Any move for Leao would signal a major shift in United's attacking resources, providing a focal point for their rebuild under the new sporting structure.
