Manchester United plan summer clearout to fund squad rebuild
Manchester United are preparing to offload five high-earning players this summer in a bid to slash their wage bill by approximately €70 million, according to a report from The Telegraph. The club's hierarchy is pushing ahead with plans to reshape the squad ahead of a potential return to the Champions League, regardless of who is appointed as the next permanent manager.
The players identified for departure are Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, and Andre Onana. The combined wages of this group are said to cost the club close to €1.4 million per week. The move is seen as critical not only to free up financial resources for new signings but also to avoid triggering substantial wage increases. A clause in many contracts means a majority of the squad would be due a 25 percent pay rise if United secure qualification for next season's Champions League.
The situation varies for each player. The departure of Casemiro has already been officially confirmed by the club. Sancho, who is on loan at his former club Borussia Dortmund, is expected to leave when his contract expires in June. Both Rashford and Hojlund are currently on loan at Barcelona and are anticipated to make those moves permanent at the conclusion of their loan spells.
The most complex case appears to be that of goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Cameroon international, also on loan, reportedly wishes to return to Old Trafford to fight for his place, setting up a potential disagreement with the club's transfer strategy. All of the players except Casemiro are currently away on loan, but United are still contributing to their salaries.
This planned exodus is directly linked to United's ambitions in the transfer market. The board recognises that the current squad lacks the depth and quality required to compete on multiple fronts, especially with the prospect of midweek European football returning. The significant savings on wages will be reinvested into several key areas of the team.
Foremost among the priorities is finding a replacement for Casemiro in central midfield. The club is reportedly considering bringing in two players for this position, with a lengthy list of potential targets that includes Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, and Newcastle United duo Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes. Furthermore, the likely permanent departure of Marcus Rashford necessitates the signing of a left winger.
Additional reinforcements are also sought at left-back, while another centre-back may be added depending on opportunities and budget. This sweeping overhaul indicates a decisive shift in strategy from United's football operations, aiming to move on from several expensive signings that have not delivered consistent value in recent seasons. The success of this clearout will directly impact the scale and quality of their incoming business this summer.
