Milan are poised to appoint Tony D’Amico as their new sporting director, replacing Igli Tare, according to reports in Italy. The move comes as Milan consider changes to their leadership structure amid uncertainty surrounding their Champions League qualification and the future of current manager Max Allegri.
Tare’s departure has been anticipated since May, with club officials reportedly seeking to reshape the directorial setup. D’Amico was previously close to joining Milan last year, but Atalanta blocked the move following the potential departure of Gian Piero Gasperini. However, with Atalanta now securing Cristiano Giuntoli as their new sporting director, D’Amico is set to have his contract – which runs until 2027 – resolved by the end of the month.
D’Amico has earned a reputation for identifying talented players at a reasonable cost, a skill set that appeals to Milan’s ownership, RedBird Capital. During his time at Atalanta, he was instrumental in bringing players like Ederson, Retegui, and Charles De Ketelaere to the club. Previously, while at Verona, he identified players such as Amir Rrahmani, Sofyan Amrabat, and Federico Kumbulla, as well as helping to launch the career of Federico Dimarco.
Negotiations between Milan and D’Amico are progressing towards a two-year contract with an option for a third season. Roma have also expressed interest in D’Amico, with manager Gian Piero Gasperini reportedly recommending him to the Friedkin family as a replacement for Ricky Massara, but Milan currently hold a strong position in the pursuit. The timing of events will be crucial as Roma attempt to challenge Milan’s lead in the coming days.
