AC Milan have signed forward Gonçalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee exceeding €70 million, including bonuses, the club confirmed on Thursday. The transfer marks a new club record for Milan, surpassing the previous highest fee paid for a player in their 126-year history. Ramos has agreed to a long-term contract with the Rossoneri, though specific details have not been disclosed.
The move for the Portuguese international comes as Milan seek to bolster their attacking options following a disappointing season which saw them finish outside of the Champions League qualification places. Owner Gerry Cardinale reportedly approved the significant investment after a month of defining the club’s transfer strategy, signalling a commitment to strengthening the squad. The signing is intended to reinvigorate the Milan fanbase following their failure to reach Europe’s premier competition.
Ramos joined PSG last summer from Benfica, where he had established himself as a promising young talent, notably scoring a hat-trick against Switzerland at the 2022 World Cup. However, his time in Paris proved somewhat inconsistent, with the forward struggling to hold down a regular starting position in a competitive attacking lineup. He made 34 appearances for PSG across all competitions, scoring 11 goals.
Milan have a history of significant, though often unsuccessful, investments in players, as highlighted by a club-compiled list of their ten most expensive signings. Previous high-profile acquisitions such as Leonardo Bonucci, Rui Costa, Charles De Ketelaere, and André Silva have all yielded varying degrees of success. The club will hope Ramos proves to be a more fruitful investment.
The arrival of Ramos provides coach Paulo Fonseca with a dynamic attacking option and increases competition for places in the Milan forward line. This transfer signals Milan’s ambition to challenge for a top-four finish in Serie A and re-establish themselves as a force in European football.
