AC Milan are reportedly exploring the possibility of appointing Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager while awaiting a final decision from Ralf Rangnick regarding the role of technical director. According to reports in Italy, Milan are becoming increasingly concerned by the delay in receiving an answer from Rangnick, who is also considering a contract renewal with the Austrian Football Federation.
Milan’s ownership group, led by Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, have been engaged in extensive talks with Rangnick for over two weeks, holding multiple meetings abroad to assess potential candidates following a recent restructuring of the club’s technical and managerial positions. While the club’s operational continuity is currently assured through the delegation of responsibilities between Paolo Scaroni and Massimo Calvelli, a significant impasse remains in filling key roles within the sporting department.
Pochettino is emerging as a viable alternative, and has reportedly agreed to preliminary economic terms with the club. However, his current commitment as head coach of the United States national team could delay any potential appointment, particularly with the Copa America currently underway. Milan are anxious to avoid a repeat of the situation four years ago, when contract renewal negotiations with Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara stalled the transfer market.
Arne Slot is also being considered as a potential option, linked to a parallel plan involving Ramon Planes as a potential sporting director. This structure would be more streamlined compared to Rangnick’s vision of a complete overhaul, which includes significant changes to the youth sector. The club is attempting to secure alternative options for both the managerial position and the sporting director role as the wait for Rangnick’s decision continues. Several key figures involved in the search process, including Rangnick, Pochettino, and Ibrahimovic, are expected to be in the United States in the coming days.
Separately, former Milan sporting director Igli Tare is under investigation in Albania for alleged money laundering and corruption, according to reports from Albanian media. The investigation is linked to a wider probe into public procurement violations involving former Albanian Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku. Tare was recently dismissed from his role at Milan alongside several other club officials.
