Atalanta's Under-23 side has secured qualification for the Serie C playoffs for the third consecutive season, a unique achievement since the team's inception. According to reports from Italy, the team managed by Salvatore Bocchetti sealed their place with a draw against Catania on the final day of the regular season. They will now face Casertana in the first round, needing a victory within 90 minutes to advance. This sustained success underscores the strength of the club's youth project, which has navigated a more challenging Girone C this season after initially competing in the northern group.
The project's uniqueness, as detailed in the Italian sports press, lies in its commitment to internal development. While other Serie C 'Under' teams often rely on experienced over-age players signed from elsewhere, Atalanta U23 exclusively uses club-grown talents for those slots. This season's roster included academy products like Matteo Panada, Alessandro Bergonzi, Tommaso Cortinovis, and Marco Ghislandi, all of whom have been with the club since childhood. The squad's average age of 21.1 is reportedly the youngest not only in their group but in the entire Serie C, featuring very young prospects like 2007-born players Idele and Navarro, and 2008-born Steffanoni.
The faith in a youthful roster has been matched by a commitment to a coaching staff with long-term vision. The club took a risk last summer by appointing the relatively inexperienced Salvatore Bocchetti following the departure of the successful Giovanni Modesto. Bocchetti, speaking after the Catania match, expressed immense happiness with the achievement, praising his players for fighting through a long and difficult season. The decision appears vindicated by both the results and the individual breakthroughs within the squad.
Several players have emerged as standout prospects, catching the eye of first-team manager Gian Piero Gasperini. Forward Dominic Vavassori, born in 2005, leads the way with eight goals this season and has already trained with the senior squad on multiple occasions. Midfielder Alberto Manzoni, also 2005, matched Vavassori's goal tally, while defender Relja Obric, a 2006-born player, has also been called up by Gasperini. Goalkeeper Paolo Vismara is another highly regarded talent from the 2003 cohort.
Further highlighting the effective scouting and integration, two arrivals from Roma's youth sector, midfielder Levak and forward Misitano, both contributed seven goals each in their debut season for the club. The continued flow of talent from the academy and astute signings of other young players provides a sustainable model. The immediate focus is on a deep playoff run, but the broader implication is clear: Atalanta's U23 setup is successfully constructing a pipeline of homegrown players ready to bolster the senior team in the coming years, following in the footsteps of recent graduates.
