Napoli are prioritizing Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as a potential reinforcement in goal, according to reports in Italy. The move comes as coach Massimiliano Allegri seeks a goalkeeper who prioritizes shot-stopping ability, and the club considers potential departures within their current goalkeeping ranks.
Napoli currently have Alex Meret and Vanja Milinkovic-Savic as their goalkeeping options, but the club is operating under a financial strategy that necessitates sales before further acquisitions. Vicario, who has played for Tottenham since 2023, is seen as an ideal candidate to usher in a new era for the club. He is reportedly eager to return to Italy and compete at a top level.
Vicario’s career began in the youth system of Udinese, but he developed through lower league football before establishing himself as a Serie A player. He has also earned appearances for the Italian national team, often alongside Meret. His development has been significant, and he has proven himself a capable goalkeeper at the highest levels. Interest in Vicario is not exclusive to Napoli, with Juventus also reportedly monitoring the situation.
There was previous interest from Inter Milan in the autumn of 2023, but they ultimately opted for Emiliano Martinez. Tottenham are believed to value Vicario around €20 million and would be open to a sale with the right offer. A recent, seemingly chance encounter between Napoli’s sporting director, Giovanni Manna, and Vicario suggests a strong mutual interest. Napoli must now decide whether to make a formal offer immediately or wait for one of their current goalkeepers to depart. Meret, who was a key figure in Napoli’s recent Scudetto wins, has one year remaining on his contract and is seeking regular playing time, while Milinkovic-Savic has not fully convinced the coaching staff.
