Newcastle United would be justified in demanding a fee of at least €115 million (£100m) for winger Anthony Gordon should Arsenal formalise their interest this summer, according to former Magpies star Chris Waddle. The 25-year-old England international has emerged as a primary target for Mikel Arteta as Arsenal seek to strengthen their forward line ahead of next season, with Bayern Munich and Chelsea also reportedly monitoring the situation.
Speaking exclusively to FootballTransfers, Waddle, who made the comments on behalf of Genting Casino, argued that Gordon's value should be benchmarked against teammate Alexander Isak. "If Alexander Isak went for £125m (€145m), you’ve got to be looking at £100m (€115m) for Anthony Gordon," he said. "He’s young, he’s only going to get better, you would think, so there’s no reason why Newcastle can’t ask for £100m+ in modern day football."
The former winger emphasised Newcastle's strong contractual position, with Gordon having four years remaining on his current deal at St James' Park. Waddle suggested the club's stance should be to treat the player as not for sale unless a monumental offer arrives. "If he wants to leave, I’d say, ‘put a transfer request in.’ And then say, ‘you’re not leaving unless it’s over £100m’," he added. Such a fee would make Gordon the third-most expensive English player in history, behind Jack Grealish and Declan Rice.
Gordon's Estimated Transfer Value (ETV), however, is assessed at just €51.9m, according to FootballTransfers' data, indicating that any deal near €115m would represent a significant premium. His value in the market is bolstered by an impressive season in which he has contributed 22 goals and assists across 46 appearances in all competitions, a bright spot in an otherwise challenging campaign for Eddie Howe's side. His proven Premier League pedigree is a key asset for suitors.
FootballTransfers understands that Arsenal are expected to submit a formal bid for Gordon when the transfer window opens. The Gunners' interest is part of a broader recruitment drive that also includes targets for a new full-back and central midfielder, with Newcastle's Valentino Livramento and Sandro Tonali also reportedly on their radar. The north London club have identified alternative forward options as well, including RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande, suggesting they are prepared to move on if the price for Gordon is deemed prohibitive.
For Newcastle, the potential sale of a key asset like Gordon would be a major test of their financial resolve and ambition following a season outside the European places. The club may be compelled to consider substantial offers to ensure compliance with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), despite their strong desire to build a competitive squad. Gordon's development since his €45.6m move from Everton in January 2023 has been marked, making him one of the most coveted English attackers currently playing.
