Newcastle United are preparing a formal bid for Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The move comes following a breakout performance at the World Cup for the 20-year-old Swiss international, where he has contributed three goals and two assists as Switzerland reached the Round of 16.
Manzambi has quickly established himself as a key player for Freiburg, recording 16 goal contributions in 47 appearances for the Bundesliga side. His performances have significantly increased his market value, with Transfermarkt currently valuing him at €50 million, though Freiburg are reportedly seeking a fee closer to €70 million. The club finished sixth in the Bundesliga last season, qualifying for the Europa League, and Manzambi was instrumental in their success.
Switzerland’s continued participation in the World Cup means any potential transfer is unlikely to be finalised imminently. However, Newcastle appear to be leading the race for his signature, with Romano suggesting they currently have the upper hand over other interested clubs. Several other teams are monitoring the situation, but Newcastle’s financial resources and ambition could prove decisive.
Manzambi primarily plays as an attacking midfielder, known for his creativity, dribbling ability, and eye for goal. He joined Freiburg in the summer of 2022 from Swiss side Servette, and quickly adapted to the demands of European football. His arrival at St. James’ Park would add further attacking impetus to Eddie Howe’s squad, which is already undergoing significant investment following the club’s recent takeover.
Newcastle currently sit third in the Premier League table, challenging for Champions League qualification. Adding a player of Manzambi’s potential would strengthen their squad depth and provide further competition for places in the attacking midfield positions. The potential transfer signals Newcastle’s intent to continue building a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
