Liverpool’s appointment of Andoni Iraola as their new head coach was reportedly met with disagreement between sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the club’s ownership group, according to Football Insider. The news comes after Liverpool moved quickly to secure Iraola following the departure of Arne Slot, a decision that has raised some eyebrows.
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness suggested there were “question marks” over the manner of Slot’s exit and that the pursuit of Iraola felt rushed. This internal friction highlights a potential difference in vision regarding the direction of the club following Slot’s unexpected availability.
Iraola arrives at Anfield after an impressive spell with AFC Bournemouth, where he established a reputation for a high-intensity, attacking style of play. He successfully steered Bournemouth to safety in the Premier League for two consecutive seasons, earning praise for his tactical acumen and ability to extract maximum effort from his players. Prior to Bournemouth, Iraola managed Rayo Vallecano, guiding them to a commendable 12th-place finish in La Liga during the 2022-23 season.
Meanwhile, former Liverpool player Dean Saunders publicly stated his belief that the club should have considered more established managers, including Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique, Carlo Ancelotti, and Jose Mourinho, before settling on Iraola. Saunders questioned whether Iraola possesses the experience and track record necessary to consistently deliver success at a club with Liverpool’s expectations. He argued that the club should prioritize managers with proven winning pedigrees.
Liverpool are now focused on building Iraola’s backroom staff, with plans already taking shape for personnel to join him at Anfield. The appointment of Iraola signals a shift in approach for the club, potentially prioritizing a more energetic and proactive style of football. His arrival will be closely scrutinised as he seeks to replicate the success of his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp, and maintain Liverpool’s position among the Premier League’s elite.
