Paris Saint-Germain are poised to sign an 18-year-old goalkeeper, with the deal progressing despite the club’s current policy of postponing transfer discussions until after the Champions League final against Arsenal. According to L’Équipe, sporting director Luis Campos has been actively working on bringing in the young player, mirroring last season’s acquisition of Renato Marin from AS Roma.
The club has deliberately delayed public discussion of transfers, with president Nasser al-Khelaïfi and manager Luis Enrique focused on the upcoming European fixture. However, behind the scenes, PSG has been making headway on both contract extensions and potential signings. Luis Enrique is expected to sign a contract extension through 2030, becoming the highest-paid individual at the club, surpassing the salaries of its players.
The arrival of a new goalkeeper raises questions about the current goalkeeping hierarchy at PSG. Three academy goalkeepers – Bilal Laurendon, Arthur Vignaud, and Martin James – are all nearing the end of their contracts. Laurendon is set to join a club in Azerbaijan, while negotiations continue with Vignaud and James regarding new deals. PSG has already offered both young players professional contracts.
The potential signing could impact the future of Marin, who arrived from Roma last season. Club officials believe Marin has the potential to develop into a top-level goalkeeper and do not want to hinder his progress. There is speculation that if Lucas Chevalier were to depart, Marin could be promoted to the number two goalkeeper position, significantly altering the purpose of the current recruitment drive. The incoming goalkeeper would then likely fill the number three slot.
This new signing does not bode well for the club’s ability to retain James, who has been performing well this season. The club’s decision-making regarding the goalkeeping position will likely have ripple effects throughout the youth setup and potentially influence future transfer strategies.
