Matthias Jaissle, the 38-year-old manager of Al-Ahli, has emerged as a potential candidate for the vacant managerial position at Milan, according to reports in the Italian press. The connection stems from Jaissle’s close relationship with current Austria national team manager Ralf Rangnick, who is believed to be a strong advocate for the young coach.
Jaissle’s playing career was unfortunately cut short at the age of 25 due to persistent knee injuries, forcing his retirement despite early promise as a central defender with Hoffenheim. He quickly transitioned into coaching, beginning his development within the youth system of RB Leipzig and later serving as an assistant coach at Brondby.
His managerial breakthrough came at Red Bull Salzburg, where he initially coached the U18 team before taking charge of the satellite club Liefering. He then led Salzburg to consecutive Austrian Bundesliga and cup doubles, establishing a reputation for a dynamic and aggressive tactical approach. In the summer of 2023, Jaissle accepted a position with Al-Ahli, where he has since won two Asian Champions League Elite titles, the most prestigious club competition in Asian football.
Rangnick’s influence on Jaissle’s career has been significant, with the experienced coach encouraging him to pursue coaching after his playing career ended. Jaissle credits Rangnick with providing guidance and support throughout his development. The younger manager describes his philosophy as ‘carpe diem’, focusing on the present moment rather than long-term planning. He holds the record as the youngest manager to qualify for the Champions League through the play-off round, achieving this feat at 33 years and 142 days old.
Jaissle’s tactical approach is heavily influenced by the Red Bull school of football, emphasizing aggressive pressing in the opponent’s half, rapid transitions, and a direct, vertical style of play. He typically employs formations such as 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1, utilizing full-back runs and a high defensive line to create opportunities. The appointment of Jaissle would likely signal a shift towards a more energetic and proactive style of play for Milan, potentially revitalizing their approach after a disappointing season. He prioritizes dynamic and hungry players, capable of turning difficult moments into opportunities.
