RB Leipzig managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer has publicly backed head coach Ole Werner despite reports of internal division regarding his future, according to Sport Bild. Sky Sports Germany reported earlier this week that members of the club’s hierarchy are split on whether to continue with the 38-year-old manager.
Schäfer addressed the speculation during an interview, stating that strong performances are rewarded at the club and that comprehensive discussions regarding Werner’s long-term future began during the team’s end-of-season trip to South Africa. He emphasized that the club is not operating under any immediate pressure to make a decision, as Werner’s current contract extends until 2027.
Werner took charge of Leipzig in March 2023, inheriting a team that had been inconsistent under previous management. He guided the club to a Champions League qualification spot in his first season, finishing fourth in the Bundesliga. Prior to joining Leipzig, Werner had successfully managed Werder Bremen, leading them to promotion back to the Bundesliga and stabilizing their position in the top flight.
Schäfer highlighted Werner’s ability to instill tactical consistency as a key factor in his positive assessment. Leipzig maintained a consistent tactical system for the vast majority of the season, and the starting eleven saw relatively few changes, a sign of quality according to Schäfer. He also praised Werner’s ability to foster a strong team spirit, noting a significant improvement in team cohesion compared to the previous season.
“Above all, Ole managed to turn our players into a real team,” Schäfer explained. “That is, for me, the biggest difference compared to the previous year.” Schäfer also pointed to Werner’s calm demeanor and pragmatic approach as beneficial during a challenging period for the club, particularly around the winter break. The club will continue to assess the season and plan for the future, but for now, Werner remains in a secure position.
