Real Madrid have officially submitted a €150 million bid for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, the club confirmed on Tuesday.
The Argentina international has been linked with several top European clubs following reports of his dissatisfaction at Atletico, with Barcelona and Arsenal also reportedly interested in acquiring his services. The bid comes after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez promised a significant offer for an unnamed player following his recent re-election.
Initially expected to be for France international Michael Olise, the offer instead landed for Alvarez, despite the player representing Real Madrid’s city rivals. Atletico Madrid quickly rejected the offer, citing Alvarez’s release clause, which stands at €500 million.
However, the situation is reportedly more complex than it appears. According to Ben Jacobs, the €500 million release clause does not apply universally, with specific provisions in Alvarez’s contract allowing certain Champions League clubs – including Barcelona – to sign him for a significantly lower fee, potentially less than the €150 million offered by Real Madrid. It is unclear whether Real Madrid are one of the clubs included in this provision, which may explain Atletico’s swift rejection.
Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in 2024 and has become a key player, though his time in Spain has been without major silverware, fueling his desire for a move. The 26-year-old is currently focused on international duty and has delegated transfer negotiations to his agent, Fernando Hidalgo. Reports from Spain suggest he may remain at Atletico if Barcelona are unable to reach an agreement with the club.
The relationship between Atletico and Barcelona is strained, with Atletico publicly dismissing Barcelona’s reported €100 million bid. Despite this, Alvarez’s preference remains a move to Barcelona, and the revelation regarding the release clause provisions could force Atletico’s hand if a suitable offer from the Catalan club materializes. Images of Alvarez as a child wearing a Real Madrid jersey have also surfaced, adding another layer to the developing story. This transfer saga is expected to continue throughout the summer window.
