Real Madrid have registered their interest in Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries, according to Fabrizio Romano, following recent changes at Liverpool. The Spanish club made contact with Dumfries’s representatives regarding a potential transfer in the summer of 2026, with the move potentially influenced by the departure of Arne Slot from Liverpool.
Dumfries had been a target for Liverpool under Slot, with his representatives actively seeking a move to Anfield. However, with Slot now sacked and Andoni Iraola appointed as the new manager, the Merseyside club’s plans may be altered. Madrid, meanwhile, are in the market for a right-back due to the expected departure of Dani Carvajal and currently only have Trent Alexander-Arnold as a recognised senior player in that position.
Romano reports that Dumfries has a release clause of slightly less than €25 million, and Real Madrid are aware of this, indicating a straightforward transfer could be possible without the need for formal bids or negotiations. Jose Mourinho, set to take over as Real Madrid manager, has reportedly requested the signing of a new right-back to bolster his squad.
The 30-year-old Dumfries has been with Inter Milan since 2021, winning two Serie A titles and three Coppa Italia trophies. He was also a key member of the Inter side that reached the Champions League final in both 2023 and 2025. Madrid are also considering other options, including Sporting CP’s Ivan Fresneda and Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Porro, but Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly unwilling to sell Porro this summer, viewing him as a crucial part of his project.
This development presents Real Madrid with a potentially affordable and experienced option at right-back, while Dumfries could find himself playing under a prestigious manager at one of Europe’s biggest clubs. The situation will likely depend on Iraola’s priorities at Liverpool and whether Madrid decide to trigger Dumfries’s release clause.
