Sporting CP have emerged as rivals to Tottenham Hotspur in the pursuit of Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha, according to a report in A Bola. The 30-year-old spent last season on loan with Tottenham, where a €30 million purchase option was agreed with Bayern, but the Portuguese club are now attempting to lure him back to Lisbon.
Palhinha progressed through the Sporting CP youth system before departing for Fulham in 2022, where he quickly established himself as a Premier League standout. His performances for Fulham earned him a move to Bayern Munich last summer for a reported €50 million, though he struggled to secure a consistent starting role in Thomas Tuchel’s side. He then joined Tottenham on loan in January, becoming a key figure in their midfield and helping them secure Champions League qualification.
The report suggests Palhinha is willing to take a substantial pay cut to rejoin Sporting, with preliminary discussions between the player and the club said to be progressing well. Sporting are keen to bring a familiar face back to the Estádio José Alvalade, offering Palhinha the opportunity to return to his boyhood club and potentially play Champions League football next season.
Negotiations between Sporting and Bayern are currently ongoing, but a deal could prove complex. Bayern are reportedly keen to recoup a significant portion of the fee they paid to Fulham just two years ago. A Bola reports that Sporting would prefer a loan deal with an option to buy, but Bayern are unlikely to agree to another temporary move for the player, preferring a permanent sale. Tottenham’s existing purchase option remains in place, giving them a straightforward path to signing Palhinha should they match Bayern’s valuation. The situation presents a potential tug-of-war between the two clubs, with Palhinha’s preference for a return to Sporting potentially complicating matters.
This transfer saga could impact both Tottenham’s and Sporting’s midfield plans for the upcoming season. If Palhinha chooses to return to Portugal, Tottenham will need to identify an alternative midfield reinforcement, while Sporting would add a proven quality player to their squad.
