Tottenham Hotspur are facing resistance in their pursuit of Benfica winger Andreas Schjelderup, with new Benfica manager Marco Silva determined to retain the player’s services. According to Correio da Manha, Silva has directly communicated to Schjelderup that he views him as a key component of his plans at Estadio da Luz.
Spurs have been active in the summer transfer window, having already invested over £230 million in Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Jan Paul van Hecke, alongside free signings Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka. Manager Roberto De Zerbi is looking to bolster his attack, particularly on the left wing following the departure of Son Heung-min last summer, and at the number nine position.
Schjelderup, 22, has emerged as a potential target, with Portuguese outlet Record reporting that Tottenham scouts monitored his performances at the World Cup, where he scored against England and provided four assists. His performances have reportedly increased his valuation to around €50 million (£43 million), with Liverpool also expressing significant interest.
Despite the external interest, Silva is attempting to persuade Schjelderup to stay in Lisbon, emphasizing his importance to the team’s tactical system. However, the report suggests Schjelderup is open to a move to a more competitive league to further his career. Benfica are also considering a sale to balance their finances after failing to qualify for the Champions League, making Schjelderup a ‘sellable asset.’
While Silva is keen to keep Schjelderup, Benfica’s financial situation and the player’s ambition could still facilitate a transfer. Tottenham are currently viewing Schjelderup as an alternative option to other high-profile targets, but the door remains open for a potential move.
