Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly using interest in Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo as leverage in their pursuit of Manchester City winger Savinho, according to Tottenham insider John Wenham. While Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League last season and are actively seeking attacking reinforcements, Wenham suggests the links to Gakpo are strategic rather than a genuine transfer interest.
Discussions are already underway for Savinho, with Tottenham believed to have a green light from Manchester City for a deal potentially worth £60 million. However, Wenham believes that publicly expressing interest in Gakpo is a tactic to potentially lower the price City are demanding for Savinho. The idea is that if City perceive Tottenham as having alternative winger options, they may be more willing to negotiate a lower fee for Savinho to ensure a sale.
Cody Gakpo joined Liverpool in January 2023 from PSV Eindhoven, and while he has shown flashes of potential, his future at Anfield is now uncertain. Reports suggest Gakpo is concerned about falling behind Rio Ngumoha in the pecking order under the new management. This has led to several clubs being alerted to his potential availability.
Alongside Tottenham, Aston Villa, AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Besiktas, Fenerbahce, and RB Leipzig have all been informed of Gakpo’s situation, with Bayern Munich also retaining a previous interest. While these clubs are aware of Gakpo’s availability, it remains unclear whether they are actively pursuing a transfer.
Tottenham’s pursuit of Savinho is seen as a priority, and the club appears willing to utilize any means necessary to secure his signature. Successfully acquiring Savinho would provide a significant boost to their attacking options as they look to avoid another relegation battle next season. The potential acquisition of Gakpo, while currently appearing unlikely, could further strengthen their squad depth.
