1.FC Union Berlin are considering Horst Steffen as a potential replacement for Marie-Louise Eta, who is set to depart at the end of the season, according to reports from Sky Germany and Sport Bild.
Steffen, 50, most recently managed Werder Bremen, and is considered a frontrunner for the position alongside Swiss coach Mauro Lustrinelli, who guided FC Thun to a surprising championship title in Switzerland this season. Lustrinelli’s success with Thun has reportedly marked him as a viable option, with parallels drawn to the appointment of Urs Fischer at Union Berlin.
Christian Eichner, currently managing Karlsruher SC after six years with the club, is also under consideration, with discussions between Union Berlin and Eichner reportedly ongoing for several weeks. The 43-year-old’s availability presents a potential opportunity for the Köpenick-based club.
René Wagner, the current interim coach at 1.FC Köln, has also been identified as a candidate, though his future at Köln remains uncertain. Should Wagner not be offered the permanent head coach role, a move to Union Berlin could be a possibility. André Breitenreiter, formerly of Hannover 96, is also on the list, though he is considered a less likely candidate.
Breitenreiter’s existing relationship with Union Berlin’s managing director of professional football, Horst Heldt, from their time together at Hannover and FC Schalke 04, could potentially aid his candidacy. However, Steffen and Eichner are currently viewed as the leading contenders to take charge at the Alte Försterei. The appointment of Steffen would bring a manager with Bundesliga experience to a club aiming to solidify its position in the league.
Union Berlin are seeking a new manager to continue their recent success, having established themselves as a consistent Bundesliga side. The club will be hoping to find a coach who can build upon the foundations laid by Eta and Fischer, and guide them to further achievements.
