Hamrun Spartans were eliminated from the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds following a 2-1 defeat to NSÍ Runavík, with the decisive goal coming from a penalty in the 92nd minute. The match ended 3-2 on aggregate in favour of the Faroese side, but the penalty decision has sparked considerable controversy.
Captain Emerson Marcelina of Hamrun Spartans believed the ball had crossed the goal line for a goal kick and calmly retrieved it from his own area to prepare for the restart. However, the referee, Peter Knudsen, did not signal a goal, and instead awarded a penalty to NSÍ Runavík which Knudsen converted to secure the win. Replays appeared to suggest the ball had indeed crossed the line before Marcelina’s intervention.
The incident occurred during a tense match where Hamrun were pushing for a late equaliser, potentially forcing extra time. The Spartans had taken the lead earlier in the game, but NSÍ Runavík responded to level the score and ultimately capitalise on the disputed penalty.
Following the final whistle, the referee and his officials required a police escort due to the intense reaction from Hamrun players and supporters. Marcelina was visibly distraught after the match, and the club’s hopes of progressing in the Europa Conference League were dashed by the contentious decision. The result marks a disappointing end to Hamrun’s European campaign for this season.
Hamrun Spartans are a prominent club in Maltese football, having won the Maltese Premier League in the 2020-21 season. This European run represented an opportunity to showcase Maltese football on a larger stage, but the controversial ending has overshadowed their efforts. NSÍ Runavík will now advance to the next qualifying round of the Europa Conference League.
