Elvis Rexhbecaj to return to Wolfsburg on free transfer
VfL Wolfsburg have confirmed the signing of midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj from Bundesliga rivals FC Augsburg on a free transfer. The 28-year-old will rejoin his former club when his contract with Augsburg expires this summer, having signed a four-year deal with Wolfsburg that will keep him at the Volkswagen Arena until 2028.
The move marks a return to familiar surroundings for Rexhbecaj, who is a product of Wolfsburg's youth academy and made 32 first-team appearances for the club between 2019 and 2022. He departed for Augsburg two years ago in search of more regular playing time and has since established himself as a key figure in midfield for Fuggerstädter, making over 60 Bundesliga appearances. His return is seen as a low-risk, high-reward acquisition for Wolfsburg, who secure an experienced domestic player without a transfer fee.
Wolfsburg's sporting director, Pirmin Schwegler, welcomed the deal in a club statement. "With Elvis, we are bringing back a player who has a close connection to VfL Wolfsburg and the city," Schwegler said. "In addition to his footballing qualities, he is defined by a strong personality that is felt both on and off the pitch. He gives everything in every match and takes responsibility." The club is currently navigating a difficult season, sitting in the lower half of the Bundesliga table, and Schwegler suggested the player's commitment during this period was particularly valued.
Rexhbecaj expressed his personal connection to the move. "Returning to Wolfsburg will be something very special for me," the midfielder said. "I grew up here and started my Bundesliga career at VfL. I will always be grateful for that. So when the door opened again here, it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to do it." He also pledged full commitment to Augsburg for the remainder of the current campaign.
For Wolfsburg, the signing addresses a need for midfield depth and adds a player familiar with the club's culture. For Augsburg, the departure of a reliable squad player on a free transfer is a loss, but one that was anticipated as his contract wound down. The transfer underscores a trend of Bundesliga clubs seeking value in the domestic market, particularly for players entering their prime years. Rexhbecaj's immediate task will be to help solidify Wolfsburg's midfield as they look to build a more competitive squad for next season.
