Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is reportedly prioritising a summer move for Real Sociedad winger Ander Barrenetxea, according to sources at TEAMtalk. The 24-year-old Spanish international has emerged as a key attacking target for Villa as Emery looks to bolster his squad ahead of a potential Champions League campaign.
Barrenetxea has been a consistent performer for Sociedad, contributing four goals and five assists in the current La Liga season despite the team’s overall struggles. His form recently earned him his first senior Spain call-up in March, where he made his international debut, marking a significant step in his career. He has totalled 46 goal contributions – 28 goals and 18 assists – across 234 appearances for Sociedad’s first team.
Comparisons have been drawn between Barrenetxea and a young Antoine Griezmann, owing to his intelligent movement, technical ability, and impact on games. Both players progressed through the San Sebastian footballing system, adding to the parallels. Emery is believed to be a strong admirer of Barrenetxea’s tactical versatility and believes he would seamlessly integrate into Villa’s attacking structure.
However, Villa face stiff competition for the player’s signature. Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur have all extensively scouted Barrenetxea and have been impressed with his performances. Real Sociedad are also determined to retain their prized asset, with Barrenetxea currently under contract until 2030 and a release clause of €75m (£65.5m, $87m) in his contract. This would require Villa to exceed their current transfer record of £52m, spent on Amadou Onana, to secure his services. Sociedad recently won the Copa del Rey, with Barrenetxea playing a key role in their triumph, further increasing his value.
Despite the difficulties, Premier League clubs believe Barrenetxea is ready for a move to a top league. Emery is also reportedly considering a move for Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, though sources suggest the player has already decided against a return to Villa Park.
