Mason Greenwood's prospects of a major summer transfer have been thrown into serious doubt following a disastrous individual performance and a breakdown in his relationship with Marseille. The forward was handed a 0/10 rating by local newspaper La Provence after a 3-0 defeat to Nantes, a match in which his attitude and effort were heavily criticised. Sources close to the club suggest the incident has severely damaged the Ligue 1 side's ability to command a fee in the region of €50 million, a price previously set for the 24-year-old.
Greenwood, who joined Marseille from Manchester United in 2024, was lambasted for a "scandalous" display characterised by constant ball losses, a perceived lack of effort, and visible frustration with teammates. Statistical analysis from the match showed he completed just one of seven attempted dribbles and was responsible for 17 turnovers. The performance capped a significant decline in form for a player who was the club's top scorer last season with 25 goals and 10 assists, and who led the Ligue 1 scoring charts earlier this campaign.
The situation has been exacerbated by a reported disintegration of Greenwood's relationships within the club, particularly with sporting director Medhi Benatia, with whom he is said to have not spoken for several weeks. Tensions have escalated since the departure of manager Roberto De Zerbi in February. Head coach Habib Beye pointedly criticised his senior players' attitude and commitment after the Nantes defeat, comments widely interpreted as being aimed at Greenwood.
French media pundits have been equally scathing. RMC's Walid Acherchour launched a furious rant on the After Foot show, stating, "This guy s** on the pitch for 90 minutes, he sulks like a spoiled child." L'Equipe also detailed an incident where Greenwood, after not receiving a pass, sighed dramatically, threw his arms in the air, and failed to track back for the subsequent counter-attack.
This public crisis comes at a critical juncture, with clubs like Juventus and Atletico Madrid previously linked with a summer move. Any transfer is complicated by the structure of his 2024 move from Manchester United, which is understood to include a sell-on clause entitling the English club to 40-50% of any future fee. Given Greenwood's past off-field controversies, which saw charges of attempted rape and assault dropped in 2023, potential suitors are known to scrutinise his behaviour intensely, making his recent conduct a significant commercial and reputational risk.
The immediate consequence is that Marseille's hopes of recouping a large fee to reinvest in their squad have been undermined. For Greenwood, who is currently on a six-game scoreless run, his poorest in France, the path to a prestigious next move now requires an immediate and sustained demonstration of professionalism, both on and off the pitch.
