Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea resolve dispute after Real Madrid comments
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has reconciled with the club's hierarchy after a public dispute sparked by his comments about Real Madrid, according to his agent. Javier Pastore confirmed that the 25-year-old Argentina international has apologised and that all parties are now "on the same page", suggesting a summer transfer is less likely.
The situation escalated last month when Fernandez, while on international duty, expressed his admiration for former Real Madrid midfielders Toni Kroos and Luka Modric and stated he would "love to live in Madrid". Upon his return to Cobham, Chelsea sanctioned the player, with head coach Liam Rosenior excluding him from the squad for two matches, against Port Vale in the FA Cup and Manchester City in the Premier League.
In response, Pastore initially called the punishment "completely unfair" and hinted Fernandez could seek a move if a satisfactory contract extension was not offered. However, speaking to French outlet Top Mercato, the agent has now struck a conciliatory tone. "What happened, happened," Pastore said. "We explained to the player that, even if he did nothing wrong, he should not have said that. He is only 25 years old. He is still young and still has things to learn."
Pastore detailed that the agent explained to the club that Fernandez's comments were made without malice. "He naturally apologised to the club, his teammates, the manager, the sporting director, everyone," Pastore added. "We are all on the same page. It was simply a matter of clearing up a misunderstanding. We made peace yesterday and the day before between Chelsea and the player. There was never really a problem."
This resolution appears to cool intense speculation that Fernandez would seek a forced exit this summer. Reports had suggested the midfielder, who joined Chelsea from Benfica for a British record fee of £106.8 million in January 2023, was prepared to submit a transfer request to facilitate a move to the Spanish capital. Real Madrid are long-term admirers of the World Cup winner and are expected to reinforce their midfield in the coming window.
For Chelsea, securing peace with one of their most expensive and high-profile assets is a significant boost as they build under Rosenior. Fernandez has been a regular starter when fit, making 33 appearances across all competitions this season. His commitment is crucial for a club aiming to return to the Champions League and challenging for major honours after a period of transition.
The episode highlights the modern pressures on players under constant media scrutiny and the delicate relationship between clubs, agents, and their assets. While the immediate conflict is resolved, Fernandez's long-term future at Stamford Bridge may still depend on the club's ability to match his sporting ambitions and present a compelling project in the coming years.
