Enzo Fernández apologises to Chelsea after Madrid comments spark dispute
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández has apologised to the club after public comments about a potential future move to Real Madrid caused an internal dispute. The Argentina international was sanctioned by the club, with manager Liam Rosenior stating a "red line had been crossed," but the situation has now been resolved according to the player's agent.
Fernández's representative, former PSG player Javier Pastore, told Topmercato that peace has been restored. "We are on the same wavelength with Chelsea. We made peace yesterday and the day before, between Chelsea and the player," Pastore said. "There never really were any problems. We have cleared things up." The agent added that the vice-captain, who was suspended for two matches, accepted his error. "He naturally asked for forgiveness from the club, his teammates, the coach, the sporting director, everyone. We are all on the same page. We just needed to clear up the misunderstanding," Pastore explained.
The incident stemmed from Fernández expressing openness to living in Madrid in the future, comments interpreted as publicly courting a move to the Spanish capital's flagship club. For Chelsea, a club investing heavily in a long-term project, such public speculation from a key player and recent World Cup winner was viewed as disruptive. Fernández joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a British record fee of £106.8 million, signing an eight-and-a-half-year contract, making him a central figure in the club's rebuild.
