RB Leipzig have signed defender Maxime Estève from Burnley on a five-year contract, the German club announced on Friday morning. The 24-year-old French centre-back departs England after two and a half years with Burnley, a period that concluded with the club’s relegation to the Championship following a 19th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
Burnley signed Estève from Montpellier in January 2024, where he had developed through the youth ranks. He quickly became a key player for the Clarets, featuring in 34 Premier League matches during the 2023-24 campaign, demonstrating his consistency and adaptability to the English top flight. Despite Burnley’s struggles, Estève’s performances reportedly attracted interest from several clubs across Europe.
RB Leipzig’s sporting director, Marcel Schäfer, expressed his delight at securing the signing, stating the move is “a very important transfer” for the club. Schäfer highlighted Estève’s experience despite his age, praising his physical attributes – standing at 1.93m – as well as his technical skills, specifically his strong left foot and ability to play proactively in defence. The club statement also noted Estève’s “audacity in building play” as a key factor in their decision.
Estève has also represented France at under-21 level, earning two caps. His departure from Burnley represents a significant loss for the Championship club, who will now need to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season. For RB Leipzig, the signing adds depth and quality to their central defence as they prepare to compete in the Bundesliga and European competitions.
