Everton are currently leading the race to sign Chelsea striker Liam Delap, with Leeds United and Newcastle United also holding discussions with the player’s representatives, according to TEAMtalk. Chelsea have indicated that Delap is one of three forwards free to leave Stamford Bridge this summer as new head coach Xabi Alonso seeks to reshape his attacking options.
Sources confirm that Alonso has informed Delap, along with Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu, that they are not part of his plans for the upcoming season. Chelsea are reportedly also pursuing Brighton’s Danny Welbeck and Bayer Leverkusen’s Kerim Alajbegovic as potential replacements. Delap joined Chelsea for around £30million, and the club are seeking a deal that will deliver a profit on that investment.
Delap struggled for consistent playing time during his first season with Chelsea, making 28 Premier League appearances, but only starting 12 of those games, and scoring just once. Despite this, several clubs remain interested in the 23-year-old, recognising his potential.
Everton are considered a particularly attractive option for Delap due to the opportunity for regular first-team football at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium under manager David Moyes. The Toffees were previously close to signing Delap last summer. While finances are not the primary concern for the player, finding a club where he can secure a prominent role is a priority. Leeds and Newcastle, who previously showed interest before Delap’s move to Chelsea, have also reopened talks. Manchester United and Fulham have also registered interest, though United are not expected to make a bid at this time.
Chelsea are eager to finalise Delap’s departure quickly to avoid protracted transfer negotiations. The club are hoping to have an agreement in place within the next week as Alonso continues to build his squad for the new season.
