Fabio Grosso has been appointed as the new manager of Fiorentina, with the club confirming a two-year contract worth €1.2 million per season. The move comes after Paolo Vanoli’s contract was not renewed following a successful campaign in securing Serie A safety for the club. Grosso arrives from Sassuolo, where he recently managed, and will be tasked with leading a revitalization of the Florentine side.
This appointment marks a return to a familiar environment for Grosso, as he previously worked within the Juventus youth system where he coached Rolando Mandragora, Moise Kean, and Nicolò Fagioli – all three of whom currently play for Fiorentina. Fabio Paratici, the club’s sporting director, is reportedly building a project around these players, viewing them as key components of a team capable of challenging for European qualification. Paratici believes Grosso’s leadership is the right fit to instill renewed enthusiasm and ambition within the club after a season spent battling relegation.
Grosso’s playing career culminated in a World Cup victory with Italy in 2006, famously scoring the winning penalty in the final against France. He brings a reputation for discipline and determination, qualities that were evident during his recent tenure at Sassuolo, where he secured 41 Serie A appearances as a manager. The club will seek compensation from Sassuolo for Grosso’s release, potentially involving forward M’Bala Nzola, who is currently owned by Fiorentina.
Kean experienced a relatively quiet season, scoring nine goals in all competitions, but Paratici is keen to retain the striker, believing his potential remains significant. Fagioli proved to be a crucial player for Fiorentina last season, dictating play from midfield, and Grosso will aim to integrate him into a slightly deeper role, emphasizing quicker transitions. Mandragora finished the season strongly, notably scoring against Juventus, and his dynamic style is expected to complement Grosso’s tactical approach. Fiorentina will look to build around this core group as they aim for a more competitive campaign next season.
