FC Augsburg have secured the signing of young midfielder Faik Sakar from RB Leipzig on a free transfer. The 18-year-old Germany youth international will join the Bundesliga club when his contract with Leipzig expires at the end of the current season, having signed a long-term deal with Augsburg that runs until the summer of 2030.
The move was confirmed by both clubs, with Augsburg sporting director Benni Weber highlighting the club's strategy. "Faik Sakar is a very good fit for our sporting and strategic approach, as he is a young player with a great deal of potential," Weber said. "He has chosen us because we were able to present him with a clear plan for his development into a Bundesliga player."
Sakar's departure from Leipzig comes after a season in which he has not featured for the first team in any competition. Despite being handed his Bundesliga debut at the age of 16 by then-coach Marco Rose, the teenager has been unable to break into the senior setup at the Red Bull Arena. His pathway at Leipzig appeared blocked amid intense competition for places, making a fresh start elsewhere a logical next step.
The player himself expressed his confidence in the move. "Augsburg offer young players the perfect environment to develop step by step. There are plenty of examples of that," Sakar said. "I’m convinced that this is exactly the right step for my development, so I’m very happy to be an Augsburg player starting from this summer."
Augsburg have built a reputation for nurturing young talent, with recent successes including the development of players like Arne Maier and Kevin Mbabu before their moves elsewhere. The club's model of providing a clear pathway to first-team football is understood to have been a decisive factor in Sakar's choice, as he seeks regular senior minutes to accelerate his growth.
Sakar, who has represented Germany at various youth levels up to the U17s, also holds eligibility to play for Turkey, France, or Cameroon through family ties, adding an interesting dimension to his international future.
