Former Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao has publicly advised Julian Alvarez to remain with the Spanish club, despite strong interest from Arsenal and Barcelona this summer. Falcao believes there is “no better place” for the Argentinian forward, praising the passion of the Atletico supporters.
Alvarez has become one of the most sought-after strikers in world football following a prolific spell at Atletico, where he has scored 49 goals in 106 appearances since joining from Manchester City in 2024. The 26-year-old is identified as a priority target for Arsenal ahead of the opening of the Premier League transfer window on June 15th, according to BBC Sport, while The Athletic reports Barcelona are also keen to secure his signature for the 2026-27 season.
Real Madrid recently submitted a bid of €150 million (£129m) for Alvarez, which Atletico swiftly rejected, responding to their rivals’ claims of a “good relationship” with a pointed rebuke. Atletico also dismissed reports of a €100 million (£86m) offer from Barcelona, offering a symbolic bag of sunflower seeds in exchange for Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal on social media.
Falcao, who scored 70 goals in 91 games for Atletico between 2011 and 2013, emphasized the unique connection players forge with the club and its fans. Speaking to ESPN, he stated that the passion and affection of the Atletico supporters are unparalleled, suggesting that while other projects may offer financial incentives, none can match the emotional bond Alvarez has cultivated in Madrid. He also noted the recent investment in Atletico by a significant fund.
Reports from Spanish outlet El Chiringuito suggest Alvarez is becoming frustrated with the public nature of the transfer saga. Pundit Jota Jordi claims the forward is “disappointed” and “angry” as the bidding war between Atletico, Real Madrid, and Barcelona unfolds. Alvarez is currently with the Argentinian national team, preparing for the World Cup, where they begin their title defence against Algeria on June 17th in Kansas City.
