Federico Dimarco has set a new Serie A record for assists by a defender in a single season, providing his 17th of the campaign during Inter's 2-2 draw with Torino on Friday. The Italy international delivered two assists in the match, first for Marcus Thuram and later for Yann Bisseck, surpassing the previous benchmark of 16 set by Papu Gomez during the 2019/20 season with Atalanta.
Dimarco reached the milestone in just 32 league appearances this term, with his trademark deliveries from the left flank proving a consistent creative outlet for the newly-crowned champions. His record-breaking assist, a corner met by Bisseck, also marked the 17th goal Inter have scored from a corner or free-kick situation this season, itself a record in Serie A since Opta began collecting such data in 2004-05.
The achievement was celebrated by teammate Thuram, who mimicked polishing Dimarco's boot after scoring from his cross, a gesture reminiscent of a famous celebration between Inter icons Francesco Moriero and Ronaldo in the 1990s. According to match reports, the moment underscored the strong understanding within the squad and Dimarco's pivotal role.
Dimarco's form this season has been exceptional, placing him among Europe's elite creators. Only Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes and Bayern Munich's Michael Olise, with 18 assists each across all competitions, have provided more key passes among players in Europe's top five leagues this campaign. His evolution from a promising academy product to a world-class wing-back has been a cornerstone of Inter's title-winning success under Simone Inzaghi.
For Inter, securing Dimarco's long-term future is now a priority, with the 26-year-old's current contract running until 2026. His record-breaking campaign not only cements his status as a key player but also significantly increases his market value, making him one of the most valuable defenders in world football. The club's immediate focus will be on building around core assets like Dimarco as they prepare for another Scudetto defense and a deeper UEFA Champions League run next season.
