Lille striker Matías Fernández-Pardo has requested a transfer this summer, drawing attention from several prominent Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool, according to reports in L’Equipe. The 21-year-old Belgium international played a key role in securing Champions League qualification for Lille last season, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in Ligue 1.
Despite Fernández-Pardo’s desire to move, Lille are currently resisting any potential sale. Club official Olivier Letang stated to L’Equipe that the player is under contract until 2029 and that the club is counting on him, having clearly communicated this to the player. Lille are also dealing with a significant injury to Hamza Igamane and the limitations of relying on veteran Olivier Giroud for consistent starts, further complicating their position.
Letang has attributed the current situation to the influence of Fernández-Pardo’s new agent, suggesting a pattern of disruptive behaviour. He pointed out that any player the club has previously agreed to sell has ultimately departed, but lamented the recurring issue of new agents stirring up trouble. Fernández-Pardo has reportedly been considering a move for over a year, and the interest from top clubs has strengthened his resolve to explore other opportunities.
Arsenal appear to be the most natural fit for Fernández-Pardo, as they seek an attacker capable of playing wide on the left but also operating centrally. The Gunners previously missed out on targets like Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez, making Fernández-Pardo an appealing alternative. He played over 1000 minutes as a winger in Ligue 1 last season, showcasing his versatility. Scouts have noted similarities to Viktor Gyokeres in his ability to attack channels and use his physicality, but Fernández-Pardo also offers the ability to effectively start in a wider position, a key attribute for Mikel Arteta’s system.
Data analytics firm SciSports suggests that Fernández-Pardo possesses the potential to become a first-team starter for Arsenal. While Lille are publicly maintaining a firm stance against a sale, Fernández-Pardo’s ambition and the strong interest from other clubs mean a summer move cannot be entirely dismissed.
