Feyenoord Rotterdam have signed goalkeeper Tjark Ernst from Hertha BSC for a fee of €5million, activating the 23-year-old’s release clause, according to reports from Sky Germany and Sport BILD.
The move sees Ernst join the Eredivisie runners-up ahead of their Champions League campaign next season. Hertha Berlin will be left to seek a replacement for the German shot-stopper, who was absent from training today as he prepares for his transfer.
Ernst established himself as a regular starter for Hertha last season, making 26 appearances in all competitions. Despite the club’s struggles, finishing 16th in the Bundesliga and narrowly avoiding relegation, Ernst’s performances drew attention from several clubs, including fellow German side VfL Wolfsburg.
Wolfsburg, however, missed out on securing Ernst’s signature, but are now reportedly monitoring the situation of Feyenoord captain Timon Wellenreuther, who could become available following Ernst’s arrival. This potential move suggests Feyenoord are prepared to reshape their goalkeeping options.
Hertha Berlin are now focusing on finding a suitable replacement, with Fortuna Düsseldorf’s Florian Kastenmeier identified as their primary target. Kastenmeier, 26, recently suffered relegation to the 3. Liga with Düsseldorf and is available on a free transfer, presenting a financially viable option for the Berlin club.
The acquisition of Ernst provides Feyenoord with a promising young goalkeeper capable of competing at the highest level. For Hertha, the departure of Ernst necessitates a swift and effective replacement to avoid further instability in a crucial position.
