Bayer Leverkusen are considering former Brazil international Filipe Luis as a potential replacement for Kasper Hjulmand, according to Sky Germany. The Bundesliga club’s management, led by CEO Fernando Carro and sporting director Simon Rolfes, are reportedly keen on the 40-year-old, having previously attempted to sign him as a player. The search comes as Hjulmand’s position appears increasingly untenable, with Saturday’s match against Hamburger SV widely tipped to be his last in charge, as reported by Kicker.
Luis has enjoyed a distinguished playing career, earning 44 caps for Brazil and winning league titles with both Atlético Madrid and Chelsea. He transitioned into coaching at Flamengo, where he led the club to a Copa Libertadores triumph in 2025. This success has evidently caught the attention of Leverkusen’s hierarchy, who are seeking a manager to implement a possession-based style with added passion and energy.
Alongside Luis, Girona coach Michel is also on Leverkusen’s shortlist. The club is also monitoring the situation with Oliver Glasner, although a return to the Bundesliga for the former Eintracht Frankfurt manager appears unlikely at present, as no major clubs have expressed concrete interest. Leverkusen are prioritizing a swift decision to allow for timely squad planning ahead of next season.
Despite the impending managerial change, Leverkusen have confirmed that Keld Bordinggaard, Hjulmand’s former assistant and long-time technical advisor, will remain with the club. Rolfes addressed recent reports suggesting Bordinggaard had been asked to leave his office, stating he will “continue to work for us”. However, Rogier Meijer’s future at Leverkusen is less certain, with reports linking him to the vacant head coach position at Sparta Rotterdam.
The appointment of a new manager will be crucial for Leverkusen as they aim to build on their recent Bundesliga form and challenge for European qualification. The club is looking for a coach who can not only deliver tactical proficiency but also inspire the team with a dynamic and energetic approach.
