AS Monaco have agreed terms with Filipe Luís to become their new head coach, dealing a blow to Bayer Leverkusen’s managerial ambitions. The Brazilian coach, previously a target for Leverkusen as a replacement for the under-pressure Kasper Hjulmand, will sign a contract with the Ligue 1 club until 2028, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Leverkusen had identified Luís as their primary candidate to lead the team forward, but Monaco’s swift move has seen them secure his services. Hjulmand’s future at the BayArena remains uncertain, with the club currently underperforming relative to expectations after a significant summer investment in the playing squad. Leverkusen currently sit mid-table in the Bundesliga.
Luís, 38, brings a wealth of experience to Monaco despite this being his first major managerial appointment. Throughout his playing career, he established himself as a consistent performer for clubs including Benfica, Atlético Madrid, and Flamengo, as well as earning 45 caps for the Brazilian national team. He recently retired from playing, concluding a distinguished career at Flamengo in July 2023.
Die Werkself are now turning their attention to alternative options, with Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner both reportedly on their shortlist. Iraola is set to depart Bournemouth at the end of the season, while Glasner will leave Crystal Palace, but both managers are currently believed to favour remaining in the Premier League according to reports. Leverkusen will need to act quickly to secure a replacement before the start of next season.
Monaco will be hoping Luís can revitalise their squad and challenge for Champions League qualification. The appointment signals a shift in direction for the club, as they look to build a team around a coach with a strong tactical understanding and a reputation for developing young players. This move could potentially establish Monaco as a force in Ligue 1 once again.
