Fiorentina have completed the signing of 19-year-old Brazilian defender Viery Fernandes from Gremio for a reported fee of €15 million plus bonuses, the club confirmed. The centre-back arrives as a promising addition to Fabio Grosso’s squad, bolstering the defensive options at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
Fernandes, born in 2005, has emerged as one of the most highly-rated young defenders in Brazil, initially starting as a left-back before transitioning to a central role. He has already accumulated significant playing time for Gremio, featuring in both the Brasileirão and Copa Sudamericana, totaling 36 appearances with 2 goals and 2 assists. He recently helped Gremio secure victory in the 2026 Campeonato Gaucho.
The transfer aligns with the strategy of sporting director Paratici, who has also secured the signing of Radu Dragusin to strengthen the Fiorentina defence. Grosso will be able to deploy Fernandes in multiple positions, with the player capable of featuring both at centre-back alongside Dragusin, or on the left side of defence. Standing at 1.88 metres, Fernandes combines physical presence with technical ability and passing range.
Fiorentina’s defence experienced difficulties last season, and the arrival of Fernandes is intended to address these concerns with a long-term solution. While his immediate impact on the pitch remains to be seen, he represents a valuable investment in a young talent with considerable potential. His aggressive playing style does present a risk of accumulating cards, having received seven yellow cards and one red card in his most recent season, which may affect his fantasy football value.
