Fiorentina are set to appoint Claudio Filippi as their new goalkeeping coach, with an official announcement expected in the coming days, according to reports in Italy. The 61-year-old will bring a wealth of experience to Fabio Grosso’s new-look coaching staff, having most recently worked at Milan.
Filippi’s arrival is seen as a significant coup for Fiorentina, with the club seeking to bolster all areas ahead of the upcoming season. He previously spent fifteen seasons at Juventus, initially as the head of goalkeeping coaches before becoming the coordinator of the youth sector. He rejoined Massimiliano Allegri at Milan last season but ultimately opted to join the project in Florence, accepting an offer from sporting director Fabio Paratici.
Throughout his career, Filippi has developed a reputation for competence and innovation in goalkeeping preparation. He holds a degree from ISEF and trained at the Foro Italico under Professor Angelo Manoni, a leading figure in biomechanics. This background has informed his scientific approach to athletic training, which has become a benchmark for many in the field. Filippi began his coaching career in 1997 at Fidelis Andria, before progressing to Chievo, Roma, Siena, and Parma.
Filippi has worked with some of the most prominent goalkeepers of the last two decades, most notably Gianluigi Buffon. He spent ten years working closely with Buffon, contributing to the veteran’s longevity at the highest level until the age of 45. Buffon himself has repeatedly credited Filippi as a key figure in his professional development. Other goalkeepers to benefit from Filippi’s coaching include Wojciech Szczęsny, Neto, Marco Storari, and Mattia Perin. The coach is known for fostering a collaborative environment among goalkeepers and staff. Fiorentina will hope he can now bring that expertise to the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
Regardless of whether David de Gea remains in goal or a new goalkeeper is signed, the club believes Filippi provides a solid foundation for the position.
