Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has confirmed he will sign a contract extension to remain at the club until 2028, with an option for a further year. The announcement comes after a successful two seasons with the Catalan giants, culminating in a second consecutive La Liga title.
Reports had circulated for some time regarding an agreement in principle to extend Flick’s deal, which previously ran until 2027. Pini Zahavi, Flick’s agent, was recently in Barcelona to finalize the terms, with MD reporting the extension would include the option for an additional season. Barcelona interim President Rafa Yuste also indicated on Monday that an announcement was imminent.
Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s match against Alaves, Flick expressed his satisfaction with the contract length, stating it benefitted both the team and the club. He acknowledged the security a longer-term deal provides, while also recognizing the value of a defined endpoint. “It’s good for my team, good for us to have the confidence to work for a couple more years,” Flick said. “We will go until ’28, and then we have the option for another year. We will see if things are right.”
Flick took charge of Barcelona in 2024 and has quickly established himself as a successful manager at the club. During his tenure, Barcelona have secured five of six possible domestic titles, with the only blemish being a Copa del Rey semi-final defeat to Atletico Madrid this season. The team’s focus now shifts towards achieving success in the Champions League, a goal frequently mentioned during recent title celebrations.
The extension provides stability for Barcelona as they look to build on their recent domestic dominance and compete for European honors. The option for a further year allows the club to assess the situation in 2028 and make a decision based on performance and future objectives.
