Nottingham Forest have initiated discussions with Tottenham Hotspur regarding a potential summer transfer for Lucas Bergvall, despite Tottenham’s initial desire to retain the midfielder. The news comes as Spurs undergo a significant squad overhaul, having already secured six new players this transfer window.
The recent acquisitions of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes for a combined £185 million prompted Bergvall to express his desire for more consistent playing time to Tottenham officials. While Spurs initially resisted the prospect of selling a player they won a competitive battle with Barcelona to sign in 2024, Bergvall’s continued push for an exit has alerted other clubs, including Aston Villa.
Forest’s interest emerged following indications that Elliot Anderson would be joining Manchester City, according to sources at TransfersDaily last month. The club has now made an official approach for the 20-year-old Swede, who featured in four matches for his national team at the recent World Cup.
Tottenham are reportedly seeking a transfer fee of around £50 million for Bergvall, a figure they believe reflects his potential value, especially given the competition for his signature. Several other clubs are monitoring the situation, which is expected to strengthen Tottenham’s negotiating position.
A departure would likely disappoint some Tottenham supporters who hold Bergvall in high regard, though his on-field impact has been limited. In 78 appearances for the club, he has scored only two goals and provided nine assists. Spurs originally paid £8.5 million to secure his services two years ago, and achieving a fee close to their asking price would represent a significant return on investment.
Tottenham have dramatically altered their transfer strategy this summer, spending over £200 million and aiming to recoup £170 million through player sales to further fund new acquisitions. This shift in approach underscores their ambition to rebuild the squad and compete more effectively in the Premier League.
