Fortuna Düsseldorf secure crucial win over Dresden under new boss Ende
Fortuna Düsseldorf reignited their survival bid with a 3-1 victory over Dynamo Dresden at the Merkur Spiel-Arena, marking a winning start for new head coach Alexander Ende. The result, which ended a five-game losing streak, lifts Düsseldorf out of the automatic relegation places in the 2. Bundesliga, at least temporarily, and cuts the gap to Dresden above them to just two points.
Cedric Itten was the standout performer, opening the scoring in the 11th minute with his 13th league goal of the season. The Swiss striker latched onto a quick, long throw from goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier, who had intercepted a Dresden cross, and finished smartly to give the hosts an early lead against the run of play. Itten's influence continued as he provided the assist for the decisive third goal.
The home side doubled their advantage just six minutes later through Emmanuel Iyoha, whose powerful strike took a double deflection on its way into the net. Despite Dresden creating chances, captain Kastenmeier produced a series of important saves to preserve Fortuna's lead throughout the match. The points were effectively sealed just before the hour mark when Itten easily bypassed defender Julian Pauli on the left flank and cut the ball back for Luca Raimund to tap in for his first goal of the campaign.
Dresden, who had arrived with momentum from back-to-back wins, managed a late consolation through substitute Jakob Lemmer's 89th-minute header, but it proved insufficient. The defeat is a setback for Dresden's own attempts to pull away from the relegation battle, while the win provides a vital morale boost for Düsseldorf under Ende, who replaced Daniel Thioune earlier this month.
The context of the relegation fight adds significant weight to this result. With several rivals, including Magdeburg, Greuther Fürth, and Arminia Bielefeld, yet to play this matchday, Düsseldorf's position remains precarious. However, the performance, particularly the potent partnership between Itten and Kastenmeier and a more resilient defensive display, offers a blueprint for Ende as he seeks to secure the club's second-tier status. For Dresden, the loss represents a missed opportunity to create a larger buffer between themselves and the bottom three, setting up a tense final stretch of the season for both clubs.
