FC Porto manager Francesco Farioli has publicly dismissed speculation linking him with Chelsea, stating he will remain with the Portuguese club. Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, the Italian coach was asked directly if he could guarantee supporters he would stay even in the face of a tempting offer from the Premier League side. "Yes, absolutely," Farioli replied, according to reports from the conference.
The 37-year-old former OGC Nice coach has been named as an admired candidate by Chelsea's hierarchy as they continue their search for a new permanent manager following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior. The Guardian reported that Chelsea hold admiration for both Farioli and former player Cesc Fàbregas. Beyond Chelsea, Farioli is also understood to be of interest to Serie A's Bologna, who are reportedly considering him as a potential successor should Vincenzo Italiano depart in the summer.
Farioli's firm commitment comes during a highly successful first season at the Estádio do Dragão. Under his guidance, Porto currently sits at the top of the Primeira Liga table and is on course for its first league title since 2022. The team's European campaign ended in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals against Nottingham Forest, but their domestic form has cemented Farioli's reputation as one of Europe's most promising young managers.
His statement provides significant clarity for Porto as they enter the decisive phase of their title race, removing a potential distraction. For Chelsea, the search for a manager continues, with the club still needing to appoint a long-term successor after a period of instability. Farioli's success in Portugal, building a cohesive and dominant side, was seen as aligning with Chelsea's reported desire for a progressive, project-oriented coach, but he has now taken himself out of contention.
The news underscores the competitive managerial market, with several top clubs seeking new leadership this summer. Farioli's rapid rise from Nice to Porto and now being linked with major European jobs marks a notable ascent in his coaching career, though he has chosen to continue his project in Portugal for the foreseeable future.
