Fred Rutten has resigned as head coach of the Curaçao national team, the Federashon Futbòl Kòrsou (FFK) announced on May 11, 2026. The departure comes just weeks before Curaçao is set to compete in their first ever FIFA World Cup tournament.
Rutten’s resignation follows what the FFK described as “constructive discussions” with the federation’s leadership. In a statement, Rutten indicated his decision stemmed from a desire to avoid a climate detrimental to professional relationships within the team and staff, suggesting internal issues contributed to his exit.
According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the move is linked to pressure from Curaçao players who have reportedly requested the return of Dick Advocaat. Advocaat previously managed the national team and successfully qualified them for the World Cup earlier this year, before stepping down in January to care for his seriously ill daughter. Reports indicate her health has since improved.
Advocaat’s potential return would be a significant development for Curaçao, offering stability and familiarity as they prepare for the tournament. He is expected to break a record by managing at the World Cup. Rutten had only been in charge for two official matches, both resulting in defeats against China and Australia, raising concerns about preparations for the World Cup.
The Curaçao team, considered an underdog in the upcoming tournament, faces a challenging path ahead. The change in management so close to the start of the World Cup adds another layer of complexity to their preparations. The team will need to quickly adapt to a new tactical approach if Advocaat does indeed return to the helm.
